Kids in the kitchen

It's been said that it's good for you to have your kids in the kitchen. Cooking is a bonding experience, and it teaches reading, math and science.

Our kids have always enjoyed cooking... once they slowed down long enough to get into the kitchen to do it. Jeff is always in search of a great chocolate chip cookie recipe. Before he went out into the big wide world he had run across a really good recipe. Last night he wanted to whip up a batch to show us just how good they were. Unfortunately I didn't have Bread Flour. I had regular flour and cake flour and masa for tortillas, but no Bread Flour. So they used a recipe I had come across in Jackie's blog. Jacki has two listings in my blog roll over to the right of this screen, I can't remember which one of the list had the cookies posted at this moment, just click over there on Jacki's Bento or The Rest of Jacki's Cooking Adventures and you'll find it.

That's Jolea doing her impersonation of Paula Deen .... she's about to take a bite out of a stick of butter.

Here they are not fighting over the beaters, Jolea is fighting Jeff to keep him from scooping up a huge glob of batter onto his beater to eat.

They like the batter better than the cookies themselves.

And here's the finished product.... yeah, they left out the chocolate chips! Did I forget to mention how weird they were?

They did make a second sheet with chocolate chips, but I didn't take a picture.... guess who was cleaning up?

I thought the cookies were very good, but Jeff still thinks his recipe is the better of the two and we will be the judge of that later in the week.

Stay tuned for the rest of the competition.

I told my son, Cole, a couple of days ago that I was going to make some oatmeal raisin cookies and he looked at me with his head tilted like a dog that's just heard an odd whistle. He said, "you know how to make oatmeal cookies?" How did he get to be 15 years old without knowing positively, absolutely, incontrovertibly that I have recipes in my head that the world yearns for? When I was 15, I was baking! How dare he question my cookie making prowess! Just for doubting me, I'm going to throw in some shredded coconut and top them off with a bit of powdered sugar. I'm only going to make one cookie. One perfect cookie will drive him insane, or should I say, more insane.

Never question my cookiebilities!

Coconut in oatmeal... yummm, those sound excellent. Any baking without chocolate doesn't go over well at our house. But the kids are getting out and tasting new things, so there's hope. Jody is pretty good in the kitchen, he makes really good chicken noodle soup, I not talking about opening a can either...

That's great they do that together! Can you send them over here for a few days?
Yesterday I made brownies to thank the "Fun Baja" people who moved all their boats so we could use their end tie in the hurricane - but the brownies could have used some professional help (could have something to do with my marine stove - it only has a burner in the BACK, so you have to turn the pan a gazillion times and the sides get cooked, but not the middle...)
I could use the cleaning machine of Jolea too.

I guess I'm VERY lucky, my kids get along VERY well, they hang out together as much as possible... even go to the bars together. Jolea does fantastic brownies. She's good at turning the pan a gazillion times, she has to do that here too.

Lovely pics. You have great kids. I wish I had a bro or a sister instead of 4 half-gits who have never given a toss about becoming friends.
I just don't get it. I really don't.
So when I see pics of happy siblings, it makes me happy, too.

I don't know what I did, but it must have been the same as the way my parents raised us. I'm very close with my brother and sister, and mom and dad were very close with their siblings too.

Hey Jommma! Been meaning to come over here to visit for a bit after seeing you over at my place. Bruce had a whole post about his connection to us, and ours to each other with you being from the Big O as well. Plus, anyone who loves Out of Africa and French Kiss is alright in my book. A$$-twitching and all.

They say the dinner table is a good place to bond. I think you'd agree with me that the kitchen first then the dinner table is an unbeatable sequence to bond.

Nice to have your kids home, isn't it?
