This is an example of that, it's my Grandma Benoit's sugar bowl. Grandma gave it to my mom years ago, so long ago that it's the only sugar bowl I ever remember us having on our table in the house I grew up in. It was given to me by my mom and we've been using it for about 15 years, maybe longer.
It's always sad when an accident happens and you loose something that you've had for a long time and you thought you'd have even longer. Today is that day.
The sugar bowl slipped from Jody's hand and hit the edge of the trivet shown here. Nasty crack, he wanted to glue it back together, knowing that it was one of my grandma's things. Nah, it's toast. I'll just keep my eyes peeled for another one. This one was coveted by my antique dealer friend because it was an Art Deco piece. I'll just have her start looking for one or Nita will run across one somewhere, she usually finds the things I want.
It's OK, it's a little sad, but it does make me think... what do we do with all this stuff that's been handed down to us through the years. The single dinner plates, one from Grandma Benoit's china and one from Grandma Nelson's china. The milk glass cake pedestal, the rose colored etched fruit bowls, the etched glass bowl that was a gift given to Grandma N by her youngest daughter? Do my kids want this stuff? What about the dining room furniture
How long do we hang onto stuff like the Ninja Turtles, Tonka Trucks and well used Barbies in the attic? We've got stuff that's gotta go. We'll hang on to the stuff we still use, like tables and china cabinets, but there's a bunch of boxes we've got to get out of here.
I don't own stuff, it owns me.

Sorry about the sugar bowl, I'll start looking for you another one. To the stuff that you have, I say if you haven't used it or seen it in the last year let someone else have it. You know that your kids don't wont it, they move around to much.
So sad when things break and you have to say goodbye. I know all about stuff, my family is a stuff magnet, I look around my house and see stuff that I have had since I was a teenager, glasses my friends gave me for my 18th birthday (only one or two of a set of six not broken), pictures on the walls and even a towel at mums (holly hobby) that I got in my early teens.... I find it really hard to let go of stuff - cos the stuff brings back memories so many....
I look around mums house and know it will be an absolute nightmare when she moves on - my brother hates stuff.... so I will no doubt be trying to find a home for all the things that still hold so many memories...
I go through spells of being able to purge. The rest of the time, I turn into my mother. Scarey!
As far as the toys go, I took one big box for each boy and put treasured toys and stuffed animals in it, marked it and put it away. The rest went away. As bad as of a pack rat that my mother could be, it was sure fun finding and remembering some of my toys.
I've already talked to Nita (Joauntie) and she'd found me 3 sugar bowls to choose from on Ebay... I talked her out of buying them, we'll find something. Maybe it's time to get a set to match my mismatched Fiesta Ware, maybe not.
Sigga, I think I only have one thing left from my high school days besides the yearbooks, that's a pair of cowboy boots my dad bought for me for my 18th birthday. It may be time for them to go.
MeOL, most of this stuff I have is my mother's. I know I have at least 5 of her wedding gifts. But we use it... I USE my antiques.
Before I let anyone other than family take this dining room suit, I'll give it to Nita.
That's a tough one. There's stuff that is just stuff, and then there's stuff that means something and you want to hang on to (like the stained glass window from Lasqueti that is currently propped against my bedroom wall).
As for the toys? I had a myriad of Gem Dolls, My Little Ponies, Barbies and all manner of things. My mom put them all in a garbage bag and brought them to my place a few years ago and I gave them to my neighbour that had a little baby girl.
Coolest sugar bowl ever!
Thanks B, It was pretty cool, everyone liked it. Look for one while you're in Hawaii, but don't pay over $30 for it. I'll send you some money when you get back.
