I jumped into some clothes, didn't bother doing my hair or make-up and walked the two blocks to the school. It was about 6:15, the phones were ringing madly with parents calling to double check that we are open or closed. They call at 6:15!!!! Do they think we are there 24 hours a day?! We don't open until 7:30 on normal days, Judi doesn't even turn the phone on until 7:30! Do they think the weather has turned badly and we have opted to spend the night in the clinic on the cots!? Common sense, let it work people.
I started calling staff members via an automated system we have. Then I came back to the house to shower and get dressed. When I returned to the school at 7:40 thinking we'd have a 10:00 start time, I met several students walking and told them to go back home to wait until 10, "have Mom or Dad watch the news on channel 8, for any updates." They were so excited.
Our Assistant Principal was at the school meeting the parents who were trying to drop off students. If you were a parent driving up to the school at 7:30 and there were only 2 cars in the parking lot wouldn't you think something was up? They all but drop kick those little darlings out of the car and zoom off. But Daniel was on the curb and guided them back home. Two of our staff members were already at school, so they were pulled into service, one making calls to other staff that live in outlying areas "turn around... go home.... no school today." Another helping me answer calls and reciting "No escuela hoy, gracias..... si manana!" The phone calls are usually 15 to one.... 15 in Spanish, 1 in English. I don't think the district contacted the Spanish television channels....
I sent another call out to staff informing them of the cancellation, waited for it to finish running and then sent a call (in English and Spanish) out to all the students in our school. I also changed the phone message so that when they reach the school answering system it will tell them classes are canceled for the day. Now I just have to remember to have Judi change that back to the generic message tomorrow!!!
So I'm back home all nice and cozy, I'm going to do a little cleaning (I miss Jolea...) and then I'm going to knit.... I'll finish a scarf I'm working on, and also work on a couple of sweaters. Jody has Radi today around 1:30, maybe I'll go with him.... NOT! He won't let me.... it's not like I'm going to say anything to the Doctor. What would I have to say to him? Oh well more knitting time.
Isn't this a cool tattoo? Not that I'm looking to get a tattoo, but if I was this is what I'd have, but very tiny, on my ankle with this cool ball of yarn and needles s
ticking out of the top of a skull! I'm a pirate knitter!Great... one of the teachers at the school just called.... some one dropped a child. It's 10.... no cars in the parking lot. I'm going back up to call all the numbers we have for this kid to be picked up. Geeez!

I need to see pictures of the weather that is wreaking all of this havoc in your area! LOL!
Our schools never close here. The buses may be cancelled but even at -40C with a blizzard going on, the schools are open, just in case some little person needed an education!
What are you going to eat now that Jolea is gone? Are you going to be ok? Are you going to starve to death? What about the cleaning? How are you going to handle that?
Your loss is obviously Courtney's gain.
;)
Hey, I often take snow days - cos I am a wimp and was taught to drive on Australian roads without snow and ice... so I realise the reason behind telling people not to go to school. But, how often does this happen in Texas - I imagine Texas to be like Perth West Australia - hot in summer, slightly cooler in winter - but never any ice and definitely never any snow. We did sometimes have hale, but that lasted like 2 minutes. You are so close to the equator too... I am amazed. I am learning so much.. Enjoy the day off if you can. As for idiots that don´t notice weather reports - they are everywhere...
Heather... I've got a way to go before I starve, I'll more than likely die from boredom with out Jolea here to find something interesting to whip up. I did sweep, mop and vacuum today. I really miss her emptying the dishwasher, I wish I had two one to fill and one to live out of...
Rox and Sigga, the climate here is a lot like Perth. It's usually so mild in the winter that we don't get snow we get freezing drizzle (like last nite) or freezing rain or sleet. So we end up with a layer of ice. Sometimes as thick as 1/2 inch. We also have lots of bridges and overpasses, when they freeze our school buses don't run. They would hate to risk killing 90 kids just for a day of school. We just don't get enough of the white stuff to know how to deal with it. But Texas is famous for it's wide range of weather, sand storms, hail storms, ice, snow, flooding rain, hurricanes we even have earth quakes! We get a little of everything... and it can all happen within a matter of hours. Keeps life interesting.
