She also prepared a turkey breast, stuffing, mashed potatoes and corn... yeah, I'll have a little of the yeller. (what movie was that from?) I'm the only one in the family that will eat anything green besides dill pickles. I came home from school to the most fabulous smell even if it was all in shades of yellow, brown and cream. (My mom always made the meal as colorful as possible... she was from the Leave It To Beaver era. Mom would have thought this meal to be lacking...)
Jolea is quite the cook, and often prepares Thanksgiving for her friends when living in far off ports where other people can't get together with their family. The first turkey she ever cooked weighed in at 27 lbs. In the pictures she had of that Thanksgiving, the bird looked a lot like an ostrich.... and no it didn't poof when they cut it. They fed an army that year in Key West.
After dinner while I did the dishes, Jolea helped by putting the leftovers away. I mentioned that I would make myself a bento for tomorrow. Jolea was excited to make it. For those of you who don't know what a Bento is go back to one of my earlier post and read about bento boxes. Or better yet check out Lyvvie's blog Obento Baby.
Here is Jolea forming onigiri from leftover stuffing. Onigiri is supposed to be made from rice... we live in Texas, I'm lucky it's not made out of squished Mrs. Baird's white bread.
This is the bottom tier. Three cornbread stuffing 'onigiri' and some turkey breast. (Check out that lovely manicure on the hand model...)
The top tier has a roll and some Baby bell cheeses, one cheddar and one a new type I have no idea what it is. I hope it's not some kind of smelly cheese that stinks up my lunch! Aren't those Babies cute!!! They have little winking eyes made from furitaki bits. She gave them little hair cuts. (Just had to get her hand in the shot!) Looks like I'll be having a little of the yeller once again tomorrow. I'll probably pack a salad along too.
Oh, I almost forgot! A few weeks ago I was in Lyvvie's blog Obento Baby, reading some of her blog links and I stumbled into one that was having a survey. The writer of the Adventures in Bento blog, stated that she was wanting comments on some knives made by New West Knifeworks. By getting the comments she would receive knives from the company. I put in my comments on the knife I thought I would use the most, a small chef knife. I also added, I wonder if I posted a blog about wanting a new Mazda Miata, would Mazda approach me to put out a survey and then give me a new car?????
Long story short... a few weeks later in the blog Pikko stated that she had picked her first prize winner and second prize winners of two knives. Yes!!!! she wrote that the first prize winner was Judith C.!!! and that she would be contacting the winners by email.
I couldn't wait.... I went back to that blog and went through all the comments.... YES! I was the ONLY Judith C!!! Finally I got an email from Pikko.... she wanted my address so she could send me the first place prize. When I came home today there was a package waiting.... It's really nice and VERY sharp. I'm almost afraid to use it.
What a great day we had. Food and prizes!

Two things - no one eats green food in your family?
No lettuce? Cucumbers? Asparagus? Cabbage? Artichokes? Green beans? Green bell peppers? Uh oh.
We call what you had "A Yellow Dinner". We have them a lot. Corn, potatoes, chicken.
Or garlic bread, rice and some other yellow type food.
Oh actually a third thing - they MAILED you a sharp knife? Eek. Stay away from the gun blogs.
Stuffing Onigiri! That is tooooo funny!!! hahahahahhahahahahahhahahahahahahahaahhaha. I often do that, too. Alter traditional Japanese recipes. hehehehehehhe Love doing it!
Stuffing Onigiri!
Love it!
Yes Heather, the only green vegetable my family members will eat and do not treat as kryptonite are dill pickles. If it's green they run the other way.
Jeff is the one who visits the gun blogs... I already have all the guns I need.
Maria... why is it I have the feeling this is a lewd connotation? I'm not sure I get it.
I think stuffing onigiri are awesome! Cornbread stuffing - now homesick.
So not only do I need the cheesecake recipe from Jolea but the stuffing recipe as well.
the knife looks brilliant. I keep thinking about getting new ones but where to get them?! My knives never stay sharp and it irritates me. Much like Maria's pumpkin trauma, my knives won't make it through a butternut squash without all my weight behind it.
Quite a pretty knife really. Excellent prize.
Lyvvie,
The stuffing came out of a box, Stove Top Stuffing, if you can't get it in Eng-a-land we can send you some!
:)
Oh by the way, mom doesn't know, but before I went to bed I made another onigiri, one out of smashed white bread!!! hahahah I put it in her bento, I bet she just found it, it's lunchtime! RAAAAAHAHAHHAHA!
I found it before I left for work... she left her evil evidence on the counter top. I saw those bread crusts and thought "what is that sneaky little scamp up to?"
I CANT BELIEVE I LEFT THE BREAD CRUST OUT!!! Dad's right, Im no pirate master.
Lyvvie checkout Pampered Chef knives. They are good, come with a sharpener/case and are reasonably priced. I have 4 or theirs. Knives are one of those things you get what you pay for. This knife came with directions on sharpening.
