We were at the Outpatient Care Center this morning at 9 for Hubby's Medi Port installation. As usual he started in picking at the nurses. Especially when we were introduced to his nurse for the day. We walked up to her and she looked at him and said what type of instrument do you play? This just blew us away. We must have had a look of confusion on our faces, she then said, "Oh, you wonder how I know..." Hubby said, "I play mandolin and guitar..." She said to him, "I can smell it on you, it's a nice smell, a light wood smell..." (That's funny, all I ever smell is Marlboros) She said she can usually smell musical instruments and dogs, she could tell what color dogs were by their smell! She took us to our little cubicle and left to get her supplies, when she returned Hubby asked her what kind of dog we had. She said, "you have a white one.... nah, you don't have a dog!" She said she didn't want to freak us out anymore than she had. We were just dumbfounded by this, but this was all Hubby needed to work with. He started in picking and joking with her, until she was in stitches, of course he had to use me as some of his joke subject as always. Those of you who don't know Hubby could not imagine how funny he is. He always has this real serious look on his face, but really he's a big clown. He has a VERY dry sense of humor.
It took about an hour for the Doctor to install the Medi Port. This port is so different from the one my Mom had a few years back for her treatment. This thing is almost flat and just a tiny opening will stick out, no more than a 1/4 of an inch. I still can't get over all the improvements in treatment through the years. They didn't put him all the way under and of course he was joking around with the Doctor and nurses in the OR. When they brought him back to his recovery cubicle, the OR nurse didn't want to leave... she shook my hand and said she'd heard all about me.... I told her it was all lies. I wasn't an evil drunk woman that had lost my mind in a fall from a grain elevator. She looked at Hubby and said "you didn't tell us about the grain elevator!" So he's fine, taking a nap, something he's getting really good at.
The Out-laws left this morning as we were heading to the hospital. I hadn't seen them since Christmas so we had a good visit. They were ready to head back to New Braunfels, after their whirl-wind tour to Oklahoma City to visit Hubby's uncle who has esophageal cancer and Hubby's older brother and family, finishing up at our house on the way back home. Father-out-law gave me the nicest round about complement last night. Mother-out-law said on the drive down he had made the comment, "at least we'll get a good meal at J and J's house!" I just can't imagine someone coming to my house and me not feeding them. I like to cook, I don't guess any of the other family members do. They ate like they hadn't eaten all weekend.
I also learned that there is a new Great-grandbaby in the family.... Hubby doesn't share much about his siblings, especially their offspring. One of his nieces had her 3rd child sometime around July 4th. She's the same age as Jolea. Did you hear that? The sound of a body hitting the floor? It was Jolea passing out when she read that her cousin now has 3 kids. That makes a total of 8 Greats for the Out-laws! I can't imagine my two kids having kids... to me they are still teenagers. Shoot, I'm still just 20-something!
It's 107 outside and nice an cool inside... maybe I'll take a little snooze too. Those naps are going to be hard to do without next week. I wonder what the boss would say if we shut down after lunch for a short siesta?
