New Year for most, half way for me.

It seems weird that my year is half over.  The second semester begins tomorrow... the down hill slide.  I have a feeling it will pass quicker than the first semester.

Time to make some New Year's resolutions.  Nah, let's just do as Jody says and not even bother wasting our breath.  Why set ourselves up for defeat.  But maybe if we don't set the bar too high.  Never mind, come to think of it we've already blown that.

After staying out until 4AM New Year's Eve/Day/morning....  The next morning (more like noonish) I suggested that we should have an unwritten rule for going out to jams.  We (Dawn, Mike and I) would all start sending Jody text messages when the clock neared 2AM.  That's plenty late enough.  I'm sure Jolea and Jeff can remember what we'd preach to them.... "nothing good happens after midnight." or "all the amateurs are out trying to drive at 2 in the morning."

We all agreed, if Jody got the text message, then all the pickers would think he'd just gotten called in to work.  They all know he's on call 24 hours a day, everyday.  It was a good plan... possibly a good resolution.  That was the problem.... I had jinxed it.  I had set it up for failure by saying it on January 1st!

So last night a bunch of them showed up over here at the house.  The jamming really started heating up and time started flying.  After a while, the wives all started sitting back with throws across their arms for warmth (we have to turn off the heat and open the back door, the pickers get hot), and as we wives often do, we start getting a little bored when the guys start suggesting tunes that they have played a couple times during the evening.  I've noticed at other jams, the wives fall asleep to the music, it's been a long day for them, they are women after all.  This is why I knit, and sit in the kitchen on a antique metal stool.  Nothing comfy for me.  I guess I could just go back there to my bed but then I wouldn't be known as the Hostess with the Mostess.  But, how are we going to pull this "called into work" plan off?  They are at OUR house, we can't leave!

Mike and Dawn held up to their end of the deal.... I think they left around 1:30.  Darn it, with her here I, have some one to chat or look through cookbooks with.  Bob had left around midnight.  Phillip and June had left around 1, after June had taken about a 30-45 minute nap in the glider rocker.  That chair would be my second choice to keep me awake, great chair for rocking babies in but not for sleeping.

Chris had given up around 2:30, and he and I were chatting about knitting and how I design sweaters.  He's kind of a computer geek and was fascinated with the Knit Wizard and Sock Wizard programs on my computer.  But Jody, Mark and Cliff kept going until after 3....   Bless Mary's heart (Mark's wife) she's got many years of experience doing this... she's a pro.  But sitting in Jody's recliner with all those pillows around her and a goose down throw across her, she was destined to fail, or should I say fall (asleep.)

Here we were again... 4 in the morning, Jody and I were looking at each other when the last one walked out, guitar and mandolin in tow.  I realize I should start putting the food away earlier, nah... that doesn't work.  We quickly lock the door so they can't get back in. Come to think of it, the majority of them have worked as truck drivers or on night shifts... this could be a problem.  I don't think we can beat them at this game.

So much for that New Year's resolution.  Glad I didn't make a whole list of them. Maybe I'll just fly by the seat of my pants in 2010.... my jeans are getting a little thread bare, hope they hold out.

Hope your first week of the new century is a good one!

I love having people over, but hate it when they stay too long. Maybe Jody needs to start putting up his instrument and say it needs to cool off. Maybe he needs to play the "cancer card" and say he needs his rest. As much as you guys have been through, that "card" ought to be good for something. I'm just saying.... :) Good luck next week. Hope I remember how to set the alarm after two weeks off.

I don't think the "cancer card" will cut it with Mark. His wife just finished Chemo and Radiation about 6 months ago for breast cancer - total Mastectomy (both!) I just went to bed last time, after all the guys with wives had left. I hated to go to bed and leave Mary in there snoozing in a chair. She doesn't come with him often and I didn't want her to wake up and find that she was the only female left.... I felt bad for her.

You're crosses on the wall always give me a chuckle. Love 'em.

Wow! That's a very late night...or a very early morning with no sleep. lol I struggle with that too. It's fun to have people over but hard to figure out a nice way to send them on their way. Good luck with next time. :-)

@Overboard.. the crosses keep the Vampires at bay, or out in the bay... either way, we don't have much trouble with them.

@Oak... I like having them over too, I get to play Martha Stewart and make appetizers. I think I'll start saying, "you don't have to go home but you can't stay here."

Ah but did Jody enjoy himself, he too could take the initiative - no need to play any cards... just well that was great time for bed now folks.... but saying that I know that I would be staying up and enjoying the jam..
