We have always used the old water tower as a reference point when giving directions. I'll often tell people on the phone when directing them to the school "if you pass the water tower you have gone too far, turn around." Or "just West of the water tower on the left."
I've been known to use it as a threat, if things were to get really tough I'd say "I'll be up on the water tower practicing my Popeye Dive." Everyone knows that water tower is MINE.
But last week as Lourdes left the school she called me (I was still working) to say that someone had beat me to the water tower. There was a man standing on top of it.

Do you you see him? Click on the picture.... this shot was taken from our front yard, wait let me get closer... from the school.

Can you tell what he's doing up there? Yeah, he's cutting chunks out of MY water tower. And he's not alone... there's a team of them. I guess I could have protested, but I didn't even have a hard hat anymore and they had cutting torches and heavy machinery. Besides, Jody had dinner started and Michael and Di were coming over. Can't protest on an empty stomach.

In 24 hours it looked like this, oh wait.... doesn't that annoy you when you are trying to drive and take pictures and the traffic lights get int he way?

There, that's a better. Then in a total of 48 hours there was nothing left. Not even bits and pieces to pick up as mementos.
Someone asked me today how I was going to give directions to the school.... I guess they'll just have to go to MapQuest or Google us, I'm going to be busy trying to find a new water tower. Maybe I'll just go to that little one in Fairview out by the new mall. It's much shorter, I'll probably bounce when I hit the ground. Oh well, I'll just crawl over to Macy's and get new shoes.

That sucks when your lost and out of water.
Bummer!
They demolished your quaint landmark, they have no heart! This is a great story.
Markitos that thing had probably been empty for a couple of years now so that's not near the problem that being lost would be.
NE, I guess it wasn't new and spiffy enough for them. Maybe it was too quaint for them like Debbie said (thanks.)
Its funny how towns change over time. My little town that I moved too back in 1989 only had one stop light. Now it has several. It wasn't until 1994 that we got our McDonalds. Now my little town is busy and crowded. No one knows anyone anymore. They tore down our landmark too.
This one has really grown in the past 15 years that we've lived here. They've just about run out of land to build on.
It's sad when old landmarks disappear. I grew up in a town that doubled in size and became a city. Now when I go back all the roads are different, all the shops are different, etc, etc. I hardly recognise the place I grew up in.
Regarding your directions dilemma - what about saying to people, "turn left where the water tower used to be"? If they're local they'll know where you mean. If they're not then you can choose to a) treat them with 'stranger in town' suspicion b) deliberately give them false directions [evil roar] c) expand on the directions to get them to where they want to go.
I prefer option b ;-)
LOL, B would be funny. Most of the locals from the east side of town know where we are... we are the oldest school in town. West-siders don't want to come over here... it's the hood.
When we moved here 15 years ago there was nothing West of US 75 except a McDonalds and two gas stations. Now it's all filled up with houses, apartments, schools and businesses. 15 years ago there were 5 elementary schools, 2 middle schools and a high school. Now we have close to 15 elementary schools (two are still in construction), 3 middle schools, an Alternative Edu. Center, a Freshman center (old high school- 9th grade only) and a new high school that's 4 times the size of the old high school. We were named one of the fastest grown towns in the US at one time. We just recently lost that title to our next door neighbors over in Frisco.
I love water towers. I just like there steady presence looking down. I'm sorry that you lost yours.
Somehow I had missed that your school was in Allen. I have a nephew in McKinney and we were over there just a few weeks ago. When Hub worked for another company he had a store in the outlet mall there and went over there all of the time.
Is school settling in?
