Yucky Weather

Bad Weather Information

DELAYED START FOR WEDNESDAY

We're not supposed to start school today until 10, but I don't know if we are going to make it. North Texas is covered in a sheet of ice. Clear slick, Black Ice. Many highways are completely closed, blocked by big trucks that can't navigate the overpasses. They don't expect anymore precipitation today, but it's not supposed to get above freezing before noon. Last night, Jody predicted we wouldn't have school at all.

The school district doesn't want to miss another day, we don't want to give up Good Friday, we're already adding an extra day to the end of the year because we had a weather shut-out a few months ago. Many parents won't even send their kids, if they themselves are not going in to their jobs in Dallas. So many times it's almost a wasted day as far as teaching goes.

Yesterday was a fiasco, the kids were wired, the teachers were wondering if they would get home before it started getting bad. The phones were ringing constantly at 7, parents wanting to know if we were having school (at that time it was only raining), then wanting to know if we were closing early. I spoke to one mom who wanted me to tell her if the weather was going to get worse! OK.... I get asked a lot of things as the school secretary, things that have to do with the school, education, the school district, attendance, discipline, I even get asked for phone numbers for other places like the Police Dept. as if I'm 411 information. But yesterday she wanted me to be a meteorologist! Do you really think I'd be answering the phone at a school at 7 in the morning if I was? I'd be on TV, making the big bucks on the Weather Channel!

They just announced there were 449 accidents yesterday in Fort Worth! The storm didn't hit here until last night around 5. They are now advising people in our county to stay home.

Jody went into work Monday, he just went to Human Resources and gave them his Medical Release. He signed a bunch of paperwork for his termination and then went to lunch with a bunch of his work buddies. He said there were 8 or 9 that met him at a nearby cafe, and about a dozen more were supposed to be there, but the management wouldn't let them leave the plant. The place would have shut down with all of them out. He said before he had left in July, the lay-offs had been happening every 3 months, now they are every 2 weeks. Orders are slowing down and they will be completely closed by July if not sooner. He was not able to get any of his personal items in the office, but his direct supervisor will bring them to him. I'm not sure when Jody will start the new job with Mark. I'm thinking Monday.

Weather up-date.... the town just south of us just canceled school.... along with all the other major school districts. It's 5:30.... my district doesn't usually decide until 6 or 6:30.

Here's a picture of the sweater

I was working on during the Christmas break. I finished it about 3 weeks ago, but wasn't able to wear it until yesterday. It's made of silk and wool, so it's rather warm. I had forgotten that I hadn't posted a picture of it.

And here are some baby socks I made last weekend. Aren't they cute?

They are for Jeff to give to a friend who is

going to be a dad soon. Jody thinks I should make a hat to match. This yarn is really thin for a hat, and I don't have anything to match, but I'll see what I can do.

I may have to make a larger back up pair, these would have fit my kids when they were newborns, but some babies are not as tiny as my kids were. I think my brother's feet were like 4 inches long!

They were knitted up in a matter of hours. The quickest pair I've ever made.

Maybe I'll get some knitting in today, but in the meantime, I'll get ready for work and head up to school to meet those kids whose parents don't watch the weather and dump them at the door when there are no cars at the school, and today there won't be anyone there until 10 if even then.

Just got off the phone with the Asst. Principal.... I get to stay home and knit!!! We're closed! He doesn't even want me to walk up and help him with the kiddies that get dumped. He's a keeper! Bad news is, we won't have a long Easter Weekend. Once again, that guy who keeps an eye on the weather knew what he was talking about... Jody should be the meteorologist.

Enjoy your day off! We have class today, but it is not that cold. Since we missed two weeks due to Ike, we don't get any days. Even inservice days are now instructional. Boo!

I'm bored to tears. I hate staying home on work days, I have too much at work waiting on me.

Everyone who sees the socks crack up... they think they are some kind of joke.

We don't know how to drive on dry pavement around here much less ice and 3/4 of the people in Ft.W drive pick-ups... pick-ups and ice don't do well... they have slippery rear-ends.

Thanks... I think I'm going to like this sweater too.

Love the sweater and the socks. You need to make those sock in big girl sizes, too.

I get tons of crazy parent calls, too. A pet peeve of mine. I try to be nice when they call us (because they know our number), pretend they got it my mistake and then ask me to look up the number for another school. I smile and give it to them, but I drew the line when someone asked for a school in ANOTHER school district. We need to start charging like 411 does. I spent all yesterday checking out students for early release. Sorry about your Easter vacation. We are adding it back at the end.

All my socks up until now have been big, these are the first minuscule I've made.

When people call wanting to know another school's phone number we like to put them on hold until they fall off the edge of the earth... we have to look the number up too! Yeah, we sit around the office playing solitaire wait for the phone to ring, HA! This will probably get me karma wise in the end but until we start getting paid like the phone company this is what we'll do. A husband of one of the teachers called and wanted the number for the police dept.... We'll start making our voices sound like a recording..."if you have an emergency, hang up and call 911

Thanks M, I hope the change is good for him... he left that part of the business 8 years ago because of the traveling.

Weather? What's that? This is L.A. It's warm here, as usual.

I wish, I'd prefer warm. What do you consider warm? Warm to me is close to 90.
